Kindergarten:

This week in kindergarten our theme is Caterpillars and Butterflies.  Students will be listening to stories about the Life Cycle of a Butterfly and learning additional information about caterpillars and butterflies.  In math, we are beginning our unit on identifying and describing three-dimensional shapes.  In writing workshop, students are continuing their work with “how-to” stories.  Students are working on adding a beginning that will catch the reader’s attention.  We have our Easter parties on Thursday!

1st grade:

With 28 school days left this year, first graders are doing a lot of skill review in all subject areas. We are gearing up for our end of the quarter on-demand writing in which we give detailed explanations of our opinions. We review books and are able to give solid reasoning for our thoughts. This is a great type of writing because we "can't be wrong"! We will enjoy spring parties at end of the week and look forward to our three day weekend!

Map testing will happen in two weeks. Keep reading and doing your best first graders!

2nd grade:

Second graders will learn about folktales again this week!  We are looking at folktales from cultures around the world.  This week, we will focus on Asian and South American folktales.  Students will practice recounting the folktale and discussing the moral or what the folktale explains.  In math, students are working on measurement and graphing. In writing, classes will be finishing their opinion units and beginning poetry!  Students will use their imaginations and look at ordinary objects with poets’ eyes!  For example, they may look at an ordinary pencil sharpener and imagine that it is a beehive!  We continue to do math fact quizzes each week.  Please continue to read and practice math facts at night!

3rd grade:

Third grade students have a busy April! This week, we will take our MAP Science assessment. The Math AIR tests will be taken on April 19 and 21. MAP reading is on April 25, and MAP Math is on the 27.

Students will continue to work on their individualized spelling words this week as well as the pattern words. They will be sorting, using their words in a sentence and looking for words with similar spelling patterns in print. This week’s pattern involves a final /k/ sound in words.

In language, the students will continue working with figurative language in the form of similes and metaphors. They will practice identifying these comparisons in text and writing their own.

Reading mini-lessons this week are going to focus on fairy tale elements. The students have completed their ELA AIR tests last week and did a wonderful job!

The last quarter of writing is focusing on adapting fairy tales into our own narratives. The students will read classics, and then made changes to the characters, settings, motivations, and solutions.

During math this week, the students are working with finding the area and perimeter of plane figures. Students practice adding the side lengths and counting the sides to find the perimeter. They will use multiplication or counting to find the area of a rectangular shape.

Our last unit in Social Studies will focus on Decisions and Economics. Students will be learning all about producers, consumers, budgets and making smart financial decisions.

We will celebrate our last school party of the year on Thursday before a long weekend!

4th grade:

Reading:  Students are continuing to read and review texts.  While doing this, they are looking for evidence to answer questions and make inferences.

Math:  Students are continuing to review before next week’s AIR test.

Social Studies:  Students are learning about recent Ohio immigrants and Ohio’s economy.

Science:  Students are working on learning about different measurement skills.

Writing:  Students are studying texts to create literature response essays.

Specials:

Physical Education: Elda students sure are moving in PE!  Third and fourth graders have been working so hard in their fitness exercises!  We will be wrapping spring results up in the next couple weeks.  The pacer running test is coming up!  The pacer is always a kid favorite!  The first and second graders continue to work on our throwing, rolling, dodging, and teamwork activities!  This week we will be finishing up Pinball and moving into Turmiopallo!  We are all working hard on our sportsmanship and many movement skills!  All students, myself included, are anxiously waiting for some sunshine to get PE outside!

Art: Students in first grade are working at stations in art.  Students are learning how to use the Photobooth program to create pictures of themselves with a variety of effects.  Some of our other stations are painting, drawing, building sculptures, cartooning and jewelry making, etc.  Our stations change every week.

Music:

1st Grade: New Notes Galore!  In first grade we have just learned about our new rhythm notes Ta and Ta-di.  We are using them in all kinds of songs and games.  We are working hard to put our steady beat skills to use when playing on the barred instruments.

2nd Grade: This month 2nd grade will be creating lots of rhythms and songs.  We will be working with some “egg”-cellent rhythms soon to create our own songs for the Easter Bunny!

3rd Grade: Singing, playing, and creating; we are having so much fun in the music room.  3rd grade is using all the concepts they have learned this year and applying them to all kinds of songs in the music room.

4th Grade: We have begun working on our concert.  This year we will be creating songs all about things that happen at night.  4th Graders will be performing their concert on Tuesday May 2nd!
