In The Classroom: 8/31 - 9/4

posted Sep 2, 2015, 10:13 AM by Jesse Kohls

We are jumping right in this week!  We are welcoming our Kindergarten students to their first full week of school!

In our Primary grade students will practice mouse skills by clicking and dragging different shapes to build a house. Students will also meet Mrs. Bell, our school counselor, and Chandler her puppet sidekick. We will start the beginning of our weekly Dinosaur School lessons with Ms. Annie. Students will learn different ways to express their emotions and navigate through new social situations. We will continue to practice our school rules and classroom routines as we get better and better each day!

We are continuing to work with the students on getting them in their routines and working independently and in small groups during centers.

In our intermediate grades the students have been working diligently on spelling pretests so that we can establish individualized high frequency word lists for each child. With this in mind, we are using practice words this week so that our students can get used to the procedures for spelling - blind sorts, establishing a rule, using words in sentences, and buddy tests.

In language, the students are studying common nouns. They have been finding nouns and categorizing them. The students have been excited to use their whiteboards to write categories for “person, place, and thing.”

In reading, we are beginning our mini-lessons on metacognition. We have been using Comprehension Connections and the Comprehension Toolkit to work with students on thinking about their reading. The teachers have been modeling their thinking while they are reading aloud to the students.

Then, during Guided Reading and Centers, the teachers will begin assessing the students for their DRAs. While the teacher is working with students independently, the rest of the class is working on their center work that reinforces ELA skills. The teacher is also guiding the students through these at this point in order to get the kids understanding what is expected of them in each center.

During math, we have been reviewing skills, focusing on place value, and addition and subtraction. We are beginning to use our new Go Math series with place value and rounding. The students have also been introduced to games from the Grab and Go Center so that they can work independently when we begin stations.

In writing, the students completed their on-demand pieces for narrative writing, informational writing, and opinion writing. This week we will being working from our Units of Study for narrative writing.

Thank you for a great start to the school year!
