Kindergarten:

This week in kindergarten our theme is Summer!  Students will be listening to a variety of stories about the season of summer and things that people do in the summer.  In math, we are beginning our last unit on classifying and sorting data.  In writing workshop, students will be finishing up their last writing pieces and sharing their writing with other students.  Kindergarten will finish the week with our Fun in the Sun: End of Year Celebration!

1st grade:

Reading- The end of the year reading benchmark is an instructional level J. Please continue to spend time reading over the summer to prepare for second grade!

Writing-To finish off the school year, students are doing animal research. By using various texts and online resources, students will collect information about different animals to write a nonfiction book.  We are looking forward to our field trip to the Cincinnati Zoo on Friday, May 12th where we will be able to see some of the animals we have been researching!

Math-This week we are finishing our final chapter of the Go Math program. Students have been working on adding and subtracting two-digit numbers.

2nd grade:

Wow!  Only 2 weeks left!  In reading, students are learning about fairy tales. This week, we will compare and contrast different versions of The Three Little Pigs.  In writing, most classes have finished their unit on poetry.  We are now creating our Young Author Books!  Some classes are publishing a collection of writing from throughout the year into the book.  Others are writing fractured fairy tales or poetry in their books.  Elda is doing a week of coding!  Students will participate in a different coding lesson each day.  It’s going to be a great week!

3rd grade:

Students will continue to work on their individualized spelling words this week as well as the pattern words. They will be sorting, using their words in a sentence and looking for words with similar spelling patterns in print. This week’s pattern involves r- controlled vowels.

In language, the students will continue working with non-literal language in the form of similes and metaphors. We will be looking at the differences, and working on recognizing them within the text.

Students will be participating in a week of CODE. We will do several “unplugged” lessons to teach Coding basics. Students will learn what an algorithm, program and machine mean in the coding world. We will end the week with an Hour of Code where students will log onto code.org and complete as many lines of code as they can! This will be a fun week!

This week we will wrap up Geometry. Students will test over Chapter 12, and work together to complete a geometry-based project. Students will be using knowledge of geometry, area and perimeter to build a shopping mall! This will be a great review of our 4th quarter math skills.

The last quarter of writing is focusing on adapting fairy tales into our own narratives. Students will be publishing their adaptive fairytale! Students will edit, revise, publish and illustrate this week!

Students will wrap up their unit on Geography this week.

4th grade:

Reading:  Students are working on reading texts and finding meaning of passages.  Students are also working on interpreting what authors say between the lines.

Math:  Students continue to learn and practice various math concepts to get ready for fifth grade.

Writing:  Students are continuing to work with example texts to compare and contrast characters, and look for similar themes as they write responses.
